BIOGRAPHIE :
Joseph Aloysius
Dwan voit le jour le 3 avril 1885, à Toronto, au Canada. Dès son plus jeune âge,
la famille Dwan émigre aux Etats-Unis et s’installe dans l’Illinois. Après des
études d’ingénieur en électricité à l’Université de Chicago, il travaille
quelques temps pour une compagnie électrique.
En 1909, il débute sa carrière

Fairbanks dans des films à succès, dont une magnifique adaptation de «Robin
des Bois» (1923). D’une incroyable
fécondité, il travaille pour les studios Astoria

s’effectue pour lui sans problème majeur. Dans les années trente, il signe avec
Par la suite, Allan Dwan réalise des
films jusqu’en 1958. Excellent technicien, il maîtrise l’art de construire des
films très efficaces avec souvent un minimum de moyens, ses trois derniers
grands succès étant : «Iwo Jima» (1950) avec John
Wayne, «Quatre étranges cavaliers» (1954) avec John
Payne, «La reine de la prairie» (1954) avec Barbara
Stanwyck et «Des yeux pour pleurer» (1957) avec Anne
Bancroft. Il signe quelques émissions télévisées puis termine sa prolifique
carrière, en 1961, avec «The most dangerous man alive», un film de
science-fiction avec Debra
Paget.
En 1971, ses entretiens avec Peter
Bogdanovich, son publiés dans un excellent ouvrage intitulé: «Allan Dwan,
le dernier pionnier». Retiré dans sa maison de Woodland Hills en Californie, il
meurt le 21 décembre 1981, victime d’une crise cardiaque.
